3D Photogrammetry Training at YAGEO Foundation Taiwan

YAGEO Foundation Taiwan and Factum Foundation are pleased to announce the beginning of their collaboration through a first training programme in Taipei. Factum Foundation’s specialists, Imran Khan and Otto Lowe, led an intensive 10-day training programme in Taipei for a team from the YAGEO Foundation.

The programme focused on the recording and processing of cultural objects using advanced 3D photogrammetry techniques, combining theoretical foundations with hands-on fieldwork.

Three trainees took part in the programme. Over the course of the training, they developed strong practical skills in photographic capture, learning to set up camera and lighting systems and to record high-resolution image sets — typically between 2,000 and 3,000 images per object — suitable for accurate 3D reconstruction. This training will enable the team in Taipei to carry out further recording of objects from their collection independently.

The training included the recording of a range of objects spanning different materials and levels of complexity, from historical sculptural fragments such as bodhisattva heads to modern and contemporary works by artists including Auguste Rodin, Marc Quinn, Jaume Plensa and Maurizio Cattelan. Particular attention was given to challenging surfaces, including reflective metals, dark finishes and white marble, requiring the use of techniques such as cross-polarisation and controlled lighting.

Alongside data capture, the programme introduced key workflows in photogrammetric processing, including alignment, mesh generation, texture mapping and orthophoto production. The emphasis was placed on building a structured understanding of the full recording pipeline, from planning and acquisition through to post-processing.

This training marks the first phase of a broader partnership between Factum Foundation and the YAGEO Foundation. The collaboration aims to establish a fully operational recording centre in Taipei, combining technology transfer, training, and the deployment of Factum’s recording systems.

In Taipei, Jorge Cano ran the installation of the Selene Photometric Stereo System and training on its use, maintenance and workflow. This will be followed by Lucida 3D scanning and colour recording in September 2026, supporting the progressive development of a skilled local team.

Through this initiative, the collaboration contributes to the broader goal of expanding access to advanced recording technologies and supporting the preservation, study and dissemination of cultural heritage in Taiwan and across the region.
