The Selene Circle

Supported by The Helen Hamlyn Trust

Factum Foundation envisions revolutionising cultural heritage preservation through the integration of art, science, and technology. The Selene Photometric Stereo System is the result of more than 20 years of research into surface recording and 3D capture of surfaces with very shallow relief. By fostering a global network of institutions, the Selene Circle aims to enhance collaboration and innovation in heritage preservation, offering training, technical assistance, and support for the development of impactful projects. The idea is to strengthen community practice between different institutions working and investing in this field.

The Selene Photometric Stereo System is the latest non-contact, ultra-high-resolution 3D and colour recording system and workflow designed and realised by Factum Arte and Factum Foundation. Conceptualised by Jorge Cano, Head of the R&D Department, and developed with a team of experts, it is specifically conceived to record the texture of flat or semi-flat (2.5D) surfaces such as paintings, manuscripts, book covers, textiles, prints, print plates, and subtle bas-reliefs.

The system is based on the photometric stereo technique, which records 2D images with a camera under different directional lighting to extract ultra-high-resolution information about the surface of an object. It excels at capturing details that are invisible to the human eye, providing rich surface information for analysis and reproduction. Since the first installation of a Selene PSS at the Bodleian Libraries as part of ARCHiOx, several institutions across the world have joined the Selene Circle to record their collections, leading to major discoveries and groundbreaking researches.

Below you can find all the institutions who have installed a Selene PSS to record their collections or specific objects. If you wish to be part of the Selene Circle and acquire a Selene PSS, write to jorge.cano@factum-arte.com
