Rosalba Carriera’s Portrait of Horace Walpole and a miniature portrait of George Walpole
Since July 2024, two new facsimiles of paintings are now on display at Strawberry Hill House, were gifted by Factum Foundation and David Cholmondeley. The high-resolution data recording of the surface and colour will also contribute to the preservation and study of the original paintings.
The pastel Portrait of Horace Walpole, 1741, by Rosalba Carriera (1673-1757) was commissioned by Robert Walpole and now hangs in Houghton Hall. This portrait, one of Carriera’s masterpieces, is considered to be the finest portrait of Horace Walpole. The facsimile means that Horace Walpole can again be seen in his gothic masterpiece. The second facsimile is a miniature by Jean-Etienne Liotard (1702-1789) that depicts Horace’s nephew, George Walpole. It was part of Horace Walpole’s collection.
As of July 2024 there are now about 35 facsimiles by Factum in Strawberry Hill House, helping to make it one of the great places to visit in London.
