Recording and Training in Saudi Arabia

Two teams from Factum Foundation travelled to Saudi Arabia in April 2017, as part of a collaboration with Art Jameel – an independent organization that fosters and promotes contemporary art and cultural heritage protection across the Middle East.

Pedro Miró and Otto Lowe trained Saudi students in recording heritage with photogrammetry at the Jameel House of Traditional Arts/ Jeddah in the old city of Al Balad in Jeddah. They also recorded heritage and worked with Saudi artist Ahmad Angawi to protect traditional heritage. Adam Lowe, Gabriel Scarpa and James Macmillan-Scott visited the Asir region with artist Ahmad Mater guided by Ali Mughawi in an effort to record the fragile Qut paintings decorating the interior walls of private homes in the Asir region.

Upon this visit, Adam Lowe also visited Project Space Art Jameel in Dubai to present the work of the Foundation and discuss the latest developments in digital recording for preservation. Click here to listen to the talk Traditional and Digital Artisans Meet.
